“I think you did well,” hissed Kahlil in an annoyed fashion.

“Of course I did well, you ass, but a fair start does not mean that we have much standing with the jury. Without hard evidence, they are still bound to side with the admiral. We need to get someone who will convince them that you are telling the truth.” She paused, and when Kahlil didn’t answer, she said, “No doubt they are going to bring up your divorce in round two because Eammon is listed in the prosecution’s witness list.”

“Don’t even think about it, Philippa. I told you that Eammon is not going to tell anyone about our divorce.”

“Either way, we’re back in court tomorrow, and said divorce is going to take centre stage whether we like it or not, so I am going to give you one more chance to tell me whatever it is that split you up because it may save you.”

Kahlil just looked away.

“Listen, Kahlil, everyone I have talked to says you were like the dream couple and they couldn’t imagine what could have come between you, so I am guessing that is has to be something that is hard to forgive and therefore something that the jury will understand. Most of them are husbands and wives themselves, you know.”

“Listen, Philippa, I know what you are trying to do for me, but you have to trust me. The consequences of our divorce being made public are just not worth it.”

“Not worth your good name?”

“Yes!” Kahlil exclaimed.

Philippa was flabbergasted. “Kahlil, what the hell happened between you two?”

“It doesn’t matter now anyway, and I am not going to ruin Eammon’s life just to get myself off.”

“How would the truth about your divorce ruin Eammon’s life?” Philippa said, and she subconsciously tilted forward, feeling like she was getting somewhere.

Kahlil suddenly realised that he had said too much and snapped his mouth shut. He then sighed and turned to leave the courtroom, calling back at Philippa, “I’ll call you tonight.”

If there was one thing Kahlil wanted that day it was to get out of that courtroom without having another confrontation. Particularly with Eammon. His ex-husband grabbed his arm just before he reached the door, and his face looked so frustrated that Kahlil was half-afraid he was going to start shouting right there and then. And when Eammon lost his temper, all hell could break loose and who knew what could come out. Kahlil felt endlessly thankful to see Ciaran there. He would calm his brother down if it came to that.

“Kahlil,” Eammon said urgently. “What did Philippa say? You have to know that a naval jury is going to side with an admiral unless they have solid proof.”

Kahlil looked toward the floor. “I hoped I would never say this to you again, Eammon, but if you have any questions talk to my lawyer.”
